Originally established in 1892 by Simon Green Atkins, Slater Industrial Academy was the forerunner to Winston-Salem State University. It was created to equip students with the education needed to succeed despite the societal challenges of the era. From its humble beginnings as a one-room schoolhouse to its emergence as a thriving institution with a legacy of career empowerment, the story of WSSU has legendary roots.
