Sam Moss came of age in Winston-Salem in the late 1960s and early ’70s at a time when musicians like Mitch Easter (Let’s Active), Peter Holsapple, and Chris Stamey (the dB’s) cut their teeth playing gigs at rec centers and church coffeehouses around town.

A guitar player of unparalleled talent, Sam "was an unassuming rock god. His onstage stance wide, guitar wielded like Excalibur, mane of hair flying, cigarette dangling as he gave himself over to the song,” wrote musician and journalist Ed Bumgardner after Moss’s death in 2007 at age 54. “He assimilated things but didn’t imitate anyone; he was just Sam Moss, a man of boundless technique, bottomless cool and bona fide exquisite tone.”

In addition to making his own music, Sam was also the owner of Sam Moss Guitars, where he sold gear, taught lessons, and mentored countless young players from 1982 to 2003, establishing his Burke Street shop as a favorite West End hang out for the local music community.

In celebration of Moss’ induction in the Winston-Salem Arts, Culture and Entertainment Memorial Walk of Fame, we've lovingly re-created the iconic Sam Moss Guitars t-shirt.
