From its humble beginnings as a dirt track in 1938, Peace Haven Speedway became Winston-Salem's first true racing destination. Weekend motorcycle races with hill climbs and hairpin curves eventually gave way to a half-mile oval with fencing and a grandstand. In 1948, the speedway was used as one of the original NASCAR tracks, and many legends of the sport competed here in the following years.
These days, a thriving neighborhood clusters the area where the speedway once stood, but the legend of Winston's original racetrack lives on.
