The legacy of our city was first fashioned in 1753, when Moravian settlers from the north arrived and began plotting land for a town to be called ‘Salem’. In 1849, the town of Winston was established—taking its name from Salem native and Revolutionary War hero Joseph Winston. After decades of cooperation and growth, the two cities were joined in civic matrimony on May 9, 1913. As one, Winston-Salem carries the torch for both a storied past and a bright future.
