Rough & Ready Postcard
The Winston-Salem Fire Department has quite an enduring legacy, as the first firehouse in North Carolina was built in Salem in 1803 (and still stands today). The most famous iteration of this storied crew was the Rough and Ready Fire Company, founded in 1868.
Their reputation for fast and effective firefighting was unrivaled in the state. With their bravery and resolve, this group of local heroes (led by F.C. Meinung) set a standard of efficiency for generations to come.
