In the late 1800s, local businessman John Casper launched his mail-order whiskey business on North Main Street in Winston-Salem. The Casper Co. became the nation’s second-largest independent distributor of spirits within a decade. Though statewide prohibition put an end to the fun in 1906, the legend of Casper’s lives on to this day.
